The move towards strategic thinking

I think throughout most of my life, I have very much done a lot of reactive type of work. It’s never been easy because I tend to like to dabble in new challenges and new projects. At least they are new to me. Because of that I tend to think a bit more tactically but not strategic enough and seeing the longer term picture.

Lately I have been forced out of my comfort zone and to also thinking broadly and to ensure that what I do for the short term has a longer term strategy in play. I learned I got a lot to improve on my PowerPoint slides, back to my days of creating “sliduments” which is sacrilegious to some creatives I know. But it’s tough to change the culture completely and I still go with the flow at times.

To me when it’s juggling multiple projects at once, I tend to go straight into hands-on mode and leave strategic thinking out which is quite important because that allows me to know when to say “yes” and when to say “no”. Now I am slowly learning to take multiple steps back and then look from a strategic view and think what’s the next step in 3 or 5 years and then work towards that.

Still a learning process for me and if you know any books to recommend do share it with me.
