Learning at RWD Mastery Class

One question I get asked a lot is where I learned to handle my car, especially the Toyota GR Yaris. I always tell them that you can always practise in an empty car park, but a structured class with proper instructors and a safe, coned-off area will teach you far more, far faster. One of the best I’ve found locally is the RWD Mastery class, run by both Ray and Charlie.

The next rookie class: 12 December 2026

Just so happen they have a rookie class happening on the 12th of December 2026 and it is held at the Subang Airport open air carpark. IBEX will reserve a large section of the carpark, lay out some cones and proceed to teach you how to handle your car in a very safe and controlled environment. One of the best ways to appreciate it is if you have a RWD car and also ideally it would be best if you had a handbrake.

  • Date and time: 12th December 2026, 8am-5pm
  • Location: Subang Airport carpark (see map below)
  • Investment fee: RM799

Earlier this year I attended my first class using the Toyota GR Yaris. This allowed me to learn about the car, how the car handles and even how the AWD system would work through the various courses. I think the most fun thing I learned there was how to handle the car whilst yanking on the handbrake. This allowed me to handle tight turns and even attempt donuts through my autocross competitions.

The class is structured, you start off with theory first before doing simple manourvres. Then you will slowly graduate to more complex items. If you drive a manual car and have a working handbrake, you will be using all of your limbs for sure!

Check out my video below of my recent autocross competition. Look at all the things I needed to manage, from gear shifting, making sure I release the clutch timely, pulling the handbrake and much much more.

It was thanks to joining the RWD Mastery classes as well as joining their open practice sessions that I gotten my initial base right and continue to find ways to improve. To be frank, I am still a total newbie in the sport, like a serious newbie compared to the other veterans and pro-drivers. Still, practice makes perfect!

So if you have a RWD car (like a GR86, a Subaru BRZ or an MX5 or any other RWD), I highly recommend this course as it really opens up your eyes on how capable your car actually is. You never know having skills like these would help you in dire situations on the road as well.

Here is another video of the instructors showing us how it is done.

So if you are keen on signing up for the course, I recommend you to check out RWDMastery instagram page where courses and practice sessions are usually announced. Hope to see you all there, you are all going to have so much fun!
