After I posted about my Apple 1st generation AirPods heading into the service centre, they finally called me back and confirmed that my AirPods is indeed problematic and that it would be “cheaper” for me to get a new set of AirPods than to fix it. I took them home on Sunday and tried them out. After 5 minutes of listening to a YouTube video, the right AirPod disconnected and I could only hear out from the left one.
After another 10 minutes, I lost connection to both my AirPods.
Sadly that means that my AirPods is a lost cause and I have reverted back to using a set of cable EarPods instead (which is driving me nuts because my iPad uses USB-C, my iPhone, Lightning and both of them doesn’t have the 3.5mm port.
I asked the guy at the shop, so what are my choices right now and he said to wait for the Powerbeats Pro which also sports the same W1 chip which makes pairing and switching so easy but I have never been a fan of the Beats sound EQ which tend to favour bass a lot more.
This brought me to the Sony WF-1000XM3, a mouthful but it is thanks to this video below by The Verge which caught my attention to Sony’s 3rd generation noise cancelling earbuds.
Priced at RM949 here locally, it costs a little bit more compared to the current generation of AirPods with the wireless charging case (RM879) and slightly less compared to the Powerbeats Pro which is priced at RM999. It sits right in between with the benefit of having noise cancellation which the other two do not have.
Yes, the charging case may be larger than normal and yes, it isn’t waterproof or anything, I am rather keen on the battery life and its noise-cancelling feature. Initially, I wanted to rule it out as a replacement because I didn’t want the noise cancelling feature to be on all the time until I watched the video which also allows for an ambient mode.
Looks like I will be checking out the earbuds this weekend at the Sony Centre at The Curve, Mutiara Damansara.
